Duffield Squash and Tennis Club Bulletin 9 July

Hi [[firstname]]

The Great British Summer is here with plenty of seasonal rainfall at Wimbledon. England are somehow in the semi-finals of the football Euros (come and watch at the club), the mighty All Blacks narrowly beat a bold England rugby team down under, and the Tour de France enters another exciting week … so what is happening at DSTC, the centre of our own sporting world?

IN BRIEF

  • We’re posting more activities on social media
  • Pickleball continues apace
  • Derbyshire Tennis Championships are at Duffield in August
  • A successful Squash club night was held on Friday
  • Kids holiday club is open for booking
  • Loads of social events are on this week at the club
  • More Gym and Fitness activities are in development

SOCIAL MEDIA

Our social media presence is now boosted by strong activity on Instagram as well as Facebook led by Millie Tomlinson and Francesca Novilla-Gormley. We’re looking for Photos and small video reels featuring club activities -young and old heroes, teams, social extravaganzas etc. Contact Millie (07447 501590) or Francesca 07887 572080) or follow and/or contribute to:

PICKLEBALL

Pickleball continues to grow in popularity at the club. The Monday evening and Wednesday afternoon socials are well-attended by both squash and tennis members, and we encourage more to join us. A new Thursday evening men’s social is starting at 5.30 pm prior to men's tennis night so the men can warm up with pickle before playing with the fluffy balls. We’ve also learned that the wet weather doesn't stop Pickleball! Last week we played in rain twice, and the nature of the balls (hard plastic) plus the sport’s standard tarmac courts, meant we could play without interruptions.

We’ve already attracted and welcomed a number of non-members to join our pickleball community. They have the opportunity to play for the next few weeks before committing to join the club. If you know any non-members who would like to give the sport a go, please ask them to contact Brent or James or just turn up on Monday (5.30 pm) or Wednesday (2 pm). It’s great fun and great value.

Our first competitive event is on Monday 15th July when we entertain Chesterfield Tennis Club at home, in a mixed friendly fixture at 6.30 pm.

TENNIS

We will be hosting the Derbyshire Tennis Championships this August (26th - 31st). Volunteers are already planning the kitchen rota. It’s also a great opportunity to see some high-quality tennis and to socialise with friends. All help welcome, so please call James or Sal if you’re available to assist in any way.

SQUASH and RACKETBALL

We had a good turnout for both Racketball and Squash at club night on Friday. Matt Gregory led the squash session after returning from his New Zealand trip. The summer season continues with Duffield 3 at home to Sutton this week. Come to the club, have a drink and support our players.

JUNIORS

This Friday sees our Tennis County juniors take part in a new structured strength and conditioning session delivered by Ross Haig.

The new extended hours holiday club is filling up fast. To book a place for your children /grandchildren kids contact James on 07968058383

SOCIAL

We have another of our popular quizzes on Friday 12 July, 7 pm . All club members and their guests are welcome. As usual, teams of up to 6 people may join in. We’ll be tucking into a ploughman’s supper in the break – but a veggie option may be requested when signing up – on the notice board downstairs. It’s really good value at £8.

Our first DSTC Ladies Day is this Saturday - Squash/racketball/tennis/pickleball/gym and social women members and their guests are invited. We will be watching the Wimbledon Ladies’ Final, enjoying a glass of Pimm’s, a shared table and, of course, strawberries and cream. Wear your summer frocks if you fancy getting dressed up … or whatever you feel comfortable in. Sign-up sheet also available on the downstairs notice board. Contact Gill for more information (07936 101280).

Art Competition : it’s great to see the extent of artistic among our members in the Art competition/gallery upstairs in the bar area – take a look. The clubhouse is a social hub to be used beyond our core sporting activities, so it’s refreshing to it re-purposed in this way. More artwork is requested, and judging will take place at the Tennis Tournament finals in September. We’d love to see more contributions from squash players of all ages and from gym members – just bring in and we’ll post with the other exhibits.

National Theatre Live : We aim to deliver this at the club at the end of July. We will be investing in a bigger screen upstairs for these and other events, and providing a TV in the downstairs lounge area so people can enjoy watching the tennis whilst having a coffee and socialising. Many thanks to James for driving this initiative.

FITNESS AND GYM

We plan to build on our refurbished gym and extend the focus to fitness and health provision for all at the club. Future plans include junior gym and lots of fitness activities utilising tennis courts, squash courts and the gym for all ages. For further info contact James 07968058383 or our PT Helen on 07801 291129. Watch this space!
