This is just a brief note to inform our members with regard to the coronavirus situation.
Although pubs and restaurants are being allowed to re-open from 4th July, sadly the Club has taken the difficult decision to keep the bar closed. Without the squash courts or gym being available, the Bar Managers, supported by the Squash Club Executive, consider it unviable to run the bar without incurring significant losses. Disappointing, but not entirely unexpected. The situation is under regular review, and there are activities taking place to prepare the Club for a safe re-opening (for example, accepting card payments to reduce or eliminate the need to handle cash). In the meantime, refurbishment of the bar area will begin in the next couple of weeks.
Work is progressing with the grant for a new boiler. Around this time of year, the squash courts would be getting a make-over. The Squash Club Executive have decided to delay this until next year to save unnecessary expenditure, especially since the courts have had far less use than normal. Any emergency repairs will of course still be performed.
On 3rd July, England Squash issued their Back to Squash draft guidance to help prepare clubs for the return to play. Again the Squash Club Executive will be reviewing this in detail and putting a plan in place to ensure the club is prepared and understands what is required to allow a safe return to squash. Let's hope that the continuing easing of lockdown restrictions will permit that to happen sooner rather than later.
On a more positive note, I am pleased to report that our member who was severely ill with the virus, has finally been allowed home after 72 days in hospital.
