Duffield Squash & Tennis Club Update - 24/03/24

Dear [[firstname]],

Short version

It’s 4 years since the phrase Covid19 entered our vocabulary. Doesn’t time fly. It’s now 22 weeks since a little bit of water got into our club.

Longer version

Tennis

  • After a few delays we now have 6 brand new fully playable carpeted tennis courts which seem to be settling in nicely
  • Court 2 now has its own entrance gate from the rear passage, so you no longer have to interrupt play on courts 1 or 3
  • New end fences have been fitted on courts 1 & 2 which look great
  • Works to resurface Court 6 will take place as soon as it is dry enough for heavy machinery to access the grass passage at the side of Village Court and down onto the court.
  • Now that the playing surfaces are almost finished we can start to think about the largely aesthetic but really important repair works to the wider grounds, pathways, planters, sheds, pavilion, etc etc. If you have any constructive thoughts or improvement suggestions by all means discuss them with Sal, James, or Nigel.

Gym

  • The gym room has been fully reinstated and looks great.
  • The gym equipment that was OK to use has been delivered back to site from storage and some of it is in position.
  • We are now waiting for a professional company to reinstall and bolt down the larger extremely heavy kit before we can safely open it up for members.
  • Hopefully this coming week we will get sign off from the insurers to order replacements for the kit that was deemed beyond repair
  • So apologies it’s taking a while, but we are working as fast as we can to get it safe to open

Ladies changing room

  • The new temporary ladies changing room ( ie the previous men’s ) is now fitted out and open for ladies to use
  • You will see there is now a nice shower, two sink units, two toilets, and the whole changing room has new lino flooring
  • Before anyone points it out we are aware that one sink has a dripping tap, and there is a small dripping water leak into one of the toilets
  • There is now a Ladies sign on the door and the fob entry system is active
  • With immediate effect the hallway toilet will now revert to being a general use toilet as it always was before

Insurers

Next week we have another meeting on site with the two insurance loss adjusters and the insurance company claim manager to further progress the many details of the claim.

As a reminder there are three mains parts to our claim which are –

  • Reinstate the damaged buildings
  • Contents
  • Business Interruption - which is the financial damage the flood had on our ability to operate as a sports and social club

Each of these parts requires detailed analysis and presentation of the loss we have incurred, and therefore the insurer’s liability.

The numbers involved are large, and it does now seem very likely that the total costs will exceed the insurers initial estimate of £1million.

Obviously the loss adjuster appointed by the insurer is trying to minimise their financial liability, and we are trying to ensure we get everything we believe is fair and due to the club under the terms of the policy.

This is proving to be a long and time consuming process, but it is critically important we get it right.

Look forward to seeing as many members as possible at the EGM at 7pm on Tuesday to elect the new Club Council.
