It is with great sadness that we note the recent death of Jeff Coles, a long-standing and popular member of the Club.
Jeff ‘Colsie’ Coles started playing squash at Callow park in the 1970’s. He then started playing at, and for, Stonebridge Squash Club in the early 80’s, where a number of us first met him, before joining Duffield in the mid / late 80’s. Here he became one of the stalwart members of the club, playing in internal leagues, representing the club in the Derbyshire Leagues and winning the John Gould Shield beating Pete Dyson in the 1989 final. Apart from playing he was always ready to help out as a volunteer, working behind the bar and keeping score during the PSL matches.
His sporting prowess was not confined to squash however, as he also played cricket for ‘Wayfarers’, Kedleston Rd., Badminton for the County (which explains why he volleyed everything on a squash court) and Golf at Allestree Park, making many appearances in the ‘Red Cow Open’. Latterly he became a member of Allestree Bowls Club where he made many more friends and, you guessed it, not content to just turn up and play became active in maintaining the greens and facilities. On top of all that he somehow found time to complete a number of long distance walks including ‘Coast to Coast’, ‘The West Highland Way’ and ‘The Pennine Way’!
Jeff was one of life’s nice guys, loyal to his friends, had a great sense of humour and was always ready to get ‘stuck in’. He will be sadly missed by Helen, Steven, Richard and by all fortunate enough to know him.
Jeff’s funeral is 10:30am on Friday 13th August at Trent Valley Crematorium, Derby Rd, Aston-on-Trent, Derby DE72 2AF. Up to 140 people are allowed so all welcome followed by a couple in his memory at The Red Cow, 2 St. Edmund's Close, Derby DE22 2DZ from 12:00.
