Coronavirus - Club Statement Update 3

I thought it about time I issued a short bulletin to update our members with regard to what has been happening at the club. Unfortunately the clubhouse, squash courts and gym remain closed.

The tennis courts are open and you all should have seen the offer from the Tennis Club for discounted membership. This week the visitor's toilet has been made available as the Tennis Club can now accommodate doubles and have extended court bookings to 90 minutes.

Discussions are taking place to determine whether the bar facility could be reopened, and whether it would be financially viable. When the Clubhouse, squash courts and gym are finally allowed to re-open, there is likely to be a delay of up to two weeks while we deep clean the facilities, get everything back up and running and ensuring that we comply with any guidance that may be offered.

In the clubhouse itself, all but the essential items have been turned off in order to minimise our running costs. Members of the house team, mainly Phill Harrison, Mike Taylor, Bob Allen with remote support from Pete Dyson, have been performing weekly maintenance checks. Thanks to them for putting themselves out. Staff have been furloughed and government grants have been successfully applied for. The annual court maintenance has, in all likelihood, been deferred to next year as a means of saving money, and also because they will not have been used anywhere near as much as usual.

The club is in the process of finalising a grant to help pay for replacing our very old and inefficient boiler. There are still a few hoops to go through, but fingers crossed, it's looking promising. Our Treasurer Bob Allen has been working hard applying for these grants and making forward projections based on various scenarios.

I would like to thank those members who have continued paying their standing orders. Cash flow is very important during the crisis we are all experiencing. The club could not survive without its members, as there is no large corporation providing a safety net. The club is run by volunteers, some who give their time freely, others are rewarded with an honorarium in recognition for the effort they put in.

When the club is finally allowed to reopen its facilities and subscriptions become payable, there will be a number of payment options for members in recognition of the support you have given to us. This is clearly dependent upon when that decision is made. The options are likely to include reduced subscriptions equivalent to the duration of the club closure. Some members have offered to forego any recompense and renew their subscriptions as normal. That option will be provided to let members decide for themselves which is the best for their circumstance, as it will be different for everyone.

I would also like to make everyone aware just how dangerous this pandemic is, as we have at least one member that we know of who has been critically ill with the virus and is hopefully on the road to recovery.

Once more, thank you for your support, and I will keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Keep safe,

Vic Malysz
Club Secretary
Duffield Squash & Racketball Club
