Duffield Squash & Tennis Club Update - 05/11/23

Dear [[firstname]],

Short version:

Storm Cieran missed us, let’s hope Delilah does too. Superhuman efforts are still being made down at the club.

Longer version:

  1. Last week we made fabulous progress towards reopening some of the tennis courts. The carpets on 1, 2, 6 & 7 were stripped & rolled on Friday and hopefully will all leave site on Monday.
  2. The next job is to pressure wash the really good quality tarmac surfaces, then courts 1, 2 & 7 will have lines painted to make them into tennis courts. This will hopefully happen this coming week.
  3. The now exposed surface of Court 6 is older concrete and whilst it is generally ok, it is not suitable to be used as a hard tennis court. However, we have plans to use this for other junior sessions, fitness, and other activities.
  4. The floodlights are currently still drying out and need the electrics professionally repairing. This will happen as soon as we can.
  5. Our plan is for members and coaches to be playing tennis on 1, 2 & 7 by Monday 13th November.
  6. We are busy working up the various details to allow the booking and safe use of courts. More details will follow in the next bulletin on Wednesday.
  7. All 5 squash court floors are being stripped out by Courtmasters starting on Tuesday next week.
  8. Courtmasters have now sent in their inspection report and quote which has been passed onto the insurance Loss Adjusters to form another big chunk of our claim.
  9. We hope to hear back from the insurance company within the next 3 weeks whether they accept liability and will in fact pay out the claim. That does mean a bit of a welcome lull in the activity on the insurance front. Everyone keep fingers crossed for good news.

Finally some thoughts about the future and how we make best use of the current situation?

  • We could simply ask the insurer to spend £1m and colossal energy to revert the club back precisely to how it was when we closed the bar and locked up on the night of Thursday 19th Oct ’23.
  • That is an option, and at the moment that is what the insurer is pricing up as the basis of our claim.
  • However if that is all we did, then we would be missing out on a once in a lifetime golden opportunity to consider an ambition for “23 Town Street” to serve current members and future ones for the coming decades.
  • Essentially we are an organisation of like minded members with the objective of running sport and social activities. Accordingly it would be totally remiss of us all if we did not think broadly and reflect on what facilities will best meet that simple objective and ensure financial security.
  • So in parallel to the immediate and obvious work going on, we are also very quickly and professionally going to do some analysis and thinking about what options there might be to create something that is demonstrably better than what we had before.
  • Do we have any preconceived ideas or agendas? – NO.
  • Do we know what the outcome of this thinking might be? – NO.
  • But we are totally committed to seeing this awful situation as an opportunity to do whatever is necessary to make the organisations that operate at “23 Town Street” stronger and more capable for many decades to come.
  • No-one has a monopoly on good ideas, so we would therefore welcome any input, which we can use to shape any proposals that we can present back for consideration.
  • Please send any input to 23townstreetduffield@gmail.com.

Best regards,

Your Recovery Team
