Duffield Squash & Tennis Club Update - 25/10/23

Dear [[firstname]],

To all Squash and Tennis Members,

It’s now 4 days since our entire club was flooded. The Recovery Team has met several times since then and kicked off significant actions to start professionally managing our way out of this situation.

  1. Immediately after the flood subsided on Saturday we started to drain the lovely lake that was on the wrong side of the flood wall. Huge thanks to Finlay Stott for sourcing a submersible pump at an hours notice, and subsequently managing it for 24 hours until the 3,000 tonnes of water were back where they came from. Thank you Team Stott.
  2. On Monday the clubhouse was electrically checked by Pete Dyson, our resident qualified sparky. Essentially the club is now safe but there are still several power circuits which are too wet to reenergise. This could take another week or so to dry out. All the essential systems (fire, security, network access) are now operational. All member fobs have been de-activated, so please don’t try and enter yet.
  3. Also during Monday, 2 large skips, 4 industrial dehumidifiers, and an industrial vacuum were all delivered to site to facilitate a partial strip out that had been authorised by the insurers.
  4. On Tuesday a small team ably lead by Ollie Storr stripped out the sodden soft floor coverings across the entire ground floor. The team certainly win first prize in the ghostbusters fancy dress competition, but that PPE was so necessary given the contamination held in the carpets. Once the floors were clear of carpets then 4 industrial dehumidifiers were set up around the ground floor to start extracting the huge amounts of water vapour still inside the building. A massive thanks and well done to Team Ollie.
  5. We have formally engaged with our insurance company and raised a claim for a major loss. We have now got named Loss Adjusters, one of whom acts for the insurer and the other one for ourselves. There is a first meeting on site this coming Friday morning and Alison Knibbs and Nigel Williams will be there on behalf of the clubs. We hope the outcome is greater clarity of what we can do ourselves and what we need professional help with as instructed by the insurer. The insurer has complemented us on our co-ordinated, responsive yet measured approach. It is critical that we carry on like that, and therefore all the generous offers to help will be essential but only when we get the various green lights.
  6. The tennis and squash sections have issued emails announcing the results of their great work in securing ongoing delivery of sport for members around the area. We are very eager to make sure we can keep activities going through the recovery period, including getting the gym and bar back up and running quickly. Linked to this we want to run as many social events as possible, perhaps a Table Tennis ladder, pétanque, quiz and/or music nights, organised run/cycle/fitness groups inside or outside the club. We would therefore love to hear all your ideas, please send them to finlaystott1@gmail.com initially so we can consider and plan them.

It has been an intense few days. The Tennis and Squash clubs are working well together and gaining momentum on the recovery. This co-ordinated approach will be essential as we are faced with the bigger challenges to recover, but provides a great basis to use the opportunity to create something even better than we had before.

Next update no later than Sunday 29th October
