Duffield Squash & Tennis Club Update - 14/01/24

Dear [[firstname]],

It sums up where the club is right now!

  • Great news that it feels like we have reached the lowest point of the problems caused by the flood of Storm Babet ! The first reinstatement building work starts at 0730 tomorrow!
  • On Friday of last week Polygon deemed that squash courts 3, 4 & 5 were dry, so all the plastic sheeting and drying equipment was removed. Courtmasters are coming to site first thing tomorrow morning to start preparing the courts ready to apply the backing coat of plaster to the walls. This process will take several days, then they will come back in about 2 weeks to apply the finishing coat and lay the wooden floors. We are still targeting playing squash / racketball by the end of February. Fantastic news!!
  • We believe the first 5 tennis carpets have now been manufactured at a factory in Belgium. These will be shipped over to the UK and delivered to site and the rolls will probably be positioned in the run off areas at the back of the courts waiting for a good enough window in the weather to get them laid and sand filled. Also in the next few weeks the wooden edges around courts 1 & 2 will be replaced by concrete similar to courts 3, 4 & 5, and similar repairs to court 7. This will necessitate those courts being out of action temporarily but we will keep you informed as we know more detail.
  • On Tuesday we have another important meeting with all parties involved in the insurance claim. This is quite significant as we are approaching the first time when the true total cost of the claim will be known. Over the last 12 weeks we have worked really hard to demonstrate to the insurers that we have been proactive and professional in our approach to reinstating our club. We believe this approach has been well received by the insurers, and it will be rewarded by a fair settlement without too many arguments along the way! Well that’s what we hope will happen!
  • On a slightly less positive note, our Buildings and Contents Insurance Policy is up for renewal next week and our current insurer has agreed to insure us, but not against flood. We always knew that there would be a hit on the policy, but our broker had hoped it would be just a significantly higher premium or a huge excess, but sadly they have joined the rest of the insurance market by not offering flood cover at all. This certainly puts more focus on us doing whatever we can to minimise the risks should the site flood again, and to make the assets as flood resilient as possible. Initial examples of this resilience is the work explained above to the concrete carpet edging and glueing down the carpet perimeters. Next will be a multitude of aspects relating to the building itself.
  • Great to see more and more folks starting to come down to play tennis, and also to use the bar in the evenings. If you’ve not been down yet, why not!?

Best regards,

Your Duffield Recovery Team
