Duffield Squash & Tennis Club Update - 3/12/23

Dear [[firstname]],

Only 18 days until it starts getting lighter again, and therefore only 21 days until all the men need to start thinking about their Christmas shopping ….

Bar

Great news that from Monday 11th Dec the bar will be opening as previously from Mon to Sat, initially on reduced hours from 6pm to 8pm. Because of this more regular opening it means that we can now put back on our fabulous cask ales, however it does mean that we have got to drink it all before it goes off. Who is up for that onerous challenge ?!

As before, it’s still possible that some bar staff might open slightly earlier, for example, if they’ve been playing tennis. Also, if there is a social event on the hours will obviously be extended.

It will be great to see as many members as possible coming back in to enjoy social time and have a drink or two.

Building works

Tomorrow, Polygon are lifting any remaining hard flooring and starting to hack some plaster off the walls around the whole ground floor. This will allow their specialist equipment to fully dry out the walls and floors which is a process that is likely to take up to the end of the year.

On Tuesday, Courtmasters are returning to hack off some squash court plaster up to about 1 metre so these walls can also be dried at the same time.

During both of these disruptive works there will be areas of the club that become out of bounds. This might be just during their daytime work hours, or it might prove to be until their works are complete, and until they start work we won’t know. Our aim is to keep as much of the bar and lounge facility open throughout this time, so please do be extra vigilant and follow whatever new instructions and notices that are displayed.

The freezing weather prevented the pressure washing of tennis courts 3, 4 & 5, but we couldn’t have played in the ice & snow anyway! This work will now take place early next week and we will let you know when it’s complete.

We have ordered the new carpets for the first 5 tennis courts and these will arrive from the manufacturers in the New Year. We have also agreed with the supplier how they will be laid and fixed down to hopefully prevent the massive rucking in the event of another “once in a 100 year flood”!

Project 23 Town Street

In several of these recent emails we have been asking for your input to what we are calling Project 23 Town Street to use the rebuild as an opportunity to invest in the club fit for the future. Thank you to those who have already sent in their thoughts to 23townstreetduffield@gmail.com

On behalf of the committees, a group of members has now started to evaluate the options. The evaluation will look at the following areas:

  • Strengths and weaknesses of the current offering to members
  • Consider the ideas and the future market for them, to retain and attract members for many years to come
  • The most popular ideas so far include a better gym, padel, flexible space for exercise classes, sauna/steam room, a more contemporary and welcoming clubhouse experience
  • Shortlist the most powerful ideas
  • How can we make best use of our site – we have already had three member architects kindly give us their initial thoughts
  • How much will any change cost, how much can we afford, and how much cash can we divert from the insurance pot.
  • We may have to phase investments due to affordability, in which case the clubhouse may have to take priority to make use of the rebuild opportunity

This will be an iterative process. The group will need until the year end before the first draft of ideas, their affordability and the fit with the purpose of the club will be collated. We will continue to communicate progress regularly.
