Duffield Squash & Tennis Club Update - 20/12/23

Dear [[firstname]],

Shorter

  • 61 days of ridiculous activity since the flood on 20th October
  • Out of adversity comes the opportunity to bring change for a bigger and better future
  • For the first time in their 140 year history the tennis and squash clubs have operated seamlessly as a single entity
  • As someone once said “Never before was so much owed by so many to so few”. An enormous thank you to the mysterious Duffield Recovery Team – have you ever seen them in the same place as Nick Knowles, just saying?
  • Happy Christmas everyone, and fingers crossed for a dry 2024

Longer

A brief summary as it’s nearly Christmas and the end of the year.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the Duffield Recovery Team. So many members have supported the recovery efforts in so many different ways since 3pm on 20th October, and this work will continue probably right through 2024. Many members have asked who are the Duffield Recovery Team, and there is always a risk in naming names because it is not a simple list and it won’t include everyone who has contributed. The reality is that it has been an ever changing team based on specific activities, but it does seem appropriate to try and say thank you to those perhaps most involved.

The immediate flood recovery team – Fin Stott, Ollie Storr, James Grindell, Alison Knibbs, Bob, Gren, Vic, Sally, Lesley, Adrian, Andy Page, Nigel Williams

Then some more joined to help pull together and assess the ideas to create a better future for “23 Town Street” – Ian Thompson, Mark Rees, Rob Gosling, Jen Smith, Ollie Lowe, Robin Hutchison

We have said on a few occasions that we are unashamedly using the flood as a positive once in a lifetime opportunity to financially safeguard the future of our club to become stronger and better for generations to come. We will keep the aspects that were already good, and make changes to the bits that members have fed back as needing improvment. The output of the initial 23 Town Street information gathering has resulted in the creation of an architects brief that aims to work out if there is a better way of spending the insurance money other than simply recreating a photocopy of what we had before.

The initial architects brief of what to try and change created from the member’s feedback is as follows:

  • A slightly bigger and better positioned member’s Gym – 90m2 (vs current at 48m2)
  • A flexible multi use space for various classes and social use - 120m2
  • Clubhouse – Create a street view entrance and welcoming experience, contemporary bar/coffee/social area
  • Unisex Sauna – 6m2
  • Padel – 2 courts minimum

These need to complement the primary focus of the club to deliver excellent Squash and Tennis and hence make the club more attractive to a wider demographic and be better prepared for the future.

We hope to have some initial feasibility concepts back in mid-January which will then need to be considered for financial and operational feasibility.

Future flood mitigation

  • As we put the club back together again it will be prudent to work out how to protect it from future floods.
  • We are in contact with the Environment Agency, our MP, and the various Council bodies who are assessing the Duffield wide issues and remedial measures
  • Whether the flood wall gets raised up is outside of our control
  • The insurance company are going to send their flood mitigation team to offer some advice
  • We are assessing some simple physical measures which we can take to make our facility more flood resistant:
    • Brick up the many squash court air brick openings into the building
    • Change exterior doors and have flood barriers fitted
    • Brick up some patio doors and change them to windows
    • The tennis court perimeter edging and carpets will be laid like courts 3, 4 & 5 which didn’t lift recently

Timelines

A frequently asked question is when will everything be fully operational again ? Unfortunately it is very hard to give firm dates when there is so much activity that sits with the insurers and third party contractors, and is therefore out of our direct control. So please take these dates as targets and subject to change as work progresses :

  • Mid January - Architects feasibility concepts back
  • End February - We hope to be playing squash on courts 3, 4 & 5, and be playing tennis on carpets on courts 1 to 5

Update email just once a week

We hope you have found these twice weekly updates interesting and informative in the 8 weeks since the flood. However now that we have got over the initial frenetic activity, we feel that an email just once a week should allow us to keep them interesting and fresh. Now that you know who has been involved on the Duffield Recovery Team then you can always ask them any other questions that arise.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and healthy New Year.

Your Duffield Recovery Team
