Squash

Your recovery team are delighted that we beat the November target of playing squash before the end of February. OK so it was only beaten by two days, but nonetheless we beat it.

Early indications are that the courts are playing very well.

The main thing we all must do is pay meticulous attention to the cleanliness of court shoes as we really don’t want to wreck the brand new beech floors by carrying sand or grit onto court on soles of shoes. You will notice a large blue sticky pad to walk on outside court 5 which seems to work to remove last bits of grit before entering court. We will therefore get another one for court 4. Please, please, please be extra vigilant.

The court booking system is fully back up and running and the bar has reverted to opening from 6pm until 10pm, so fill your boots and get playing again!

Tennis

We have an extremely busy two weeks ahead of us as Fosse are back laying carpets and applying about 20 tonnes of sand on courts 1, 2 & 7.

This will mean the car park will be closed off to allow heavy plant to move around every daytime. We will open the carpark as soon as we possibly can, and hopefully evening use can return before it is fully reopen.

You might have seen new fencing and steel work laid behind court 1, which is to replace the damaged fences at both ends of courts 1 & 2, and we are also taking the opportunity to fit an entrance gate directly onto court 2 from the rear path.

Building work schedules always change day by day, so please be prepared for short term interruption and cancellations of court bookings over the next couple of weeks. We need to be patient and respectful that there is a lot of work to get done, and we need to allow the workmen full freedom of access at no notice for our long term benefit.

Gym

The gym is plastered and half painted with that being finished in another week.

The new LVT flooring is going down tomorrow, with rubber matting at the far end to follow.

The cleaned gym kit is being delivered w/c 11th March so we hope to have the gym operation by the end of that week

Replacement new running machines and cross trainers are being evaluated and sourced and will be here as soon as we can get them

Changing rooms

As previously communicated, now that squash has restarted we have taken the tricky decision to make the previous ladies changing room into the mens. The logic for this decision is purely based on there being significantly more men who use the showers than ladies. We obviously know this isn’t ideal, but neither was having a flood last October.

However mid last week we have now also decided to try and utilise a section of the old men’s changing room as a changing room for ladies, and also for juniors in the afternoons who for a while have been using the pool room to change which is wholly unsuitable.

When the old men’s room has been made safe and hygienic we will communicate it’s reopening. Until this time please do patiently bear with us whilst a very few people endeavour to complete an awful lot of work.

You will also notice that we have disabled the fob entry into the changing rooms. This is to allow easier access for men to get to their only toilets now that the hallway toilet has been designated and marked up as ladies only. Please do respect this protocol.

23 Town Street

The 23 Town Street group met again this week with very good representation from squash members. We thought it would be useful to recap the process the group is following. Please note that no decision has been made yet. Any speculation is therefore speculation, any confusion please talk to Vic or Gren to start with.

The process is :

Shortly after the flood there were many people saying we had to make best use of the opportunity to do the best for the club's future.
We surveyed all of the members for ideas they would like to see in the club. The top answers were Padel, better Gym, flexible space for classes, a far more welcoming clubhouse experience, and a Sauna.
These suggestions were researched for feasibility / practicality and a brief was created. This brief was given to an architect who was asked how we might incorporate these ideas into our facility.
In parallel Tennis and Squash were asked to prepare their longer term strategies.

This is where we currently are. The club is and will remain a Tennis and Squash club. We need to conclude these strategies before we consider what flexibility we have to incorporate other facilities for the members. Given the obvious challenges we have around the age demographic and the club utilisation, we need to give this stage proper thought. Vic and Gren are leading the development of these strategies. Please give them your full support in the interest of your sport.

To set the expectation, it is most likely that after Easter there will enough information to consider any proposals. As usual we will keep communicating to you all.

Best regards,

Your Duffield Recovery Team
