Duffield Squash & Tennis Club Update 2 - 21/10/23

To all Squash and Tennis members

Saturday 21st October update

The force of nature has hit us hard, harder than anyone can ever remember in the history of the clubs. As the water starts to recede, we are now beginning to understand the scale of what we will need to do recover the clubs. The damage is substantial and will require a lot of time and effort to put right. Attached are some photos from the first survey this morning. In summary the ground floor of the club was flooded with over 8 inches of water throughout and the Tennis courts are estimated to have had over 2ft of water as a minimum.

Tennis – Courts 1,2, 6 and 7 carpets have rucked. Courts 3,4 and 5 are still underwater. Outbuildings flooded

Squash – All 5 courts have severely warped floors.

Gym – Flood water, first estimate is floor and equipment can be cleaned

Ground floor – Flooded with dirty water, all carpets will need replacing. Thanks to the fast action on Friday, many items were lifted to the first floor and avoided damage

Cellar – Dirty flood water, chiller unit has tripped (potential water damage)

A core team has been formed to lead the recovery comprising of members of both committees co-ordinated by Nigel Williams and Andy Page. The recovery will be managed as a single activity with both clubs pulling together. Given the scale of the claim we will strictly follow the instructions of the insurance company. Many people have offered to help, many thanks and be ready for when we can start, but in the meantime please do not enter the club (soiled water, unknown causes of electric circuits tripping and potentially damaging the evidence for the insurers).

The recovery core team have started to consider; protecting the club (making sure it doesn’t get worse); launching the insurance process; making the club safe; cleaning the club; repairing and recovering the club; providing ongoing member activities; communications; finances.

We plan to provide any updates to these activities every Wednesday and Sunday. The first update is :

Protecting the club – Pump installed which is helping to drop the water level about 1 inch every hour (depth at the far end was about 18 inches this afternoon). Main gas and electric systems working. Survey completed. Tennis Floodlights isolated

Insurance – launched and awaiting assessor/insurer to give instructions

Making safe – Barriers in place. Tripped circuits to be examined on Monday morning

Repair – Specialists for squash floors and tennis surfaces have/are being contacted

It is likely that a full recovery will take months, although Bar/social, Gym, asphalt Tennis etc may be possible much earlier. The Tennis and Squash sections are exploring options to provide ongoing sport.

The team are confident that this is fully recoverable, and could provide an opportunity to build in improvements. Thankyou again for all the offers of help, at this stage please let us know if you have any specialist knowledge/equipment as we start to workout in detail what we will need to do. If you have questions, ideas, red bull for any of the core team, please contact any committee member, Nigel or Andy.

Next update no later than Wednesday 25th October
