Duffield Squash and Tennis Club Bulletin 1 July

Hi [firstname]

We’re eight months on from the flood and our unified club is vibrant with activity.

HOUSE and GROUNDS
The clean-up of outside areas has progressed well with most of the flood-damaged waste now removed. The grounds look in great condition, with grass and hedges trimmed and weeds removed thanks to John Gillispie, who works diligently with Nigel Williams and his team. Our large and ageing flat roof was inspected this week as part of ongoing maintenance for our insurance cover. This was given the ‘all-clear’, which is great news for the club.

SQUASH and RACKETBALL

The summer season continues with Duffield 2 away to Sutton this week. Club Night started well last Friday and this week we’ll adjust to the new Club Night start times to 5.40pm for Racketball and 7pm for Squash. Any club member with access to MyCourts (includes tennis gym members) can book into a Club Night session. If in doubt – just contact Dean who will be more than happy to assist on dean.gregory1@ntlworld.com or 07951 545545.

Matt Gregory is coming back from his PSA tour of Australia/New Zealand this week. He will come on Friday Club Nights to give technical guidance to all our players and even offer some one-on-one coaching when available. From 1 September Welsh international Rhys Evans is moving to Derby to train with Matt Gregory. Matt and Rhys train with Nick Matthew in Sheffield, and they will give their time to help improve our players at Duffield. More details to follow.

SOCIAL and BAR

After the razzamatazz of the Glasto Festival, we are winding down for the summer with another of our popular quizzes on Friday 12 July , 7 pm. All club members and their guests are welcome. Our ace quizmaster is Neil Smith, so please come along and support him. As usual, teams of up to 6 people may join in. A ploughman's supper will be served - a veggie option may be requested when signing up – on the notice board downstairs. It’s really good value at £8.

Our first DSTC Ladies’ Day is to be held on 13 July. Squash/racketball/tennis/pickleball/gym and social women members and their guests are invited. We will be watching the Wimbledon Ladies’ Final, enjoying a glass of Pimm’s, a shared table and, of course, strawberries and cream. Wear your summer frocks if you fancy getting dressed up … or wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Sign-up sheet will be available soon, also on the downstairs notice board.

New tables and chairs have been purchased to create a lounge area downstairs for members and guests to relax in and we’ll soon have a high-quality coffee machine which will provide fresh bean to cup coffee - no longer any need for people to wait for tables in Town Street coffee shops. Thanks to Sal Hargreaves and Lizzie Paish for driving this initiative. The tea- and coffee-making facilities will still be available in the kitchen for those who prefer.

The club has now procured a license to show National Theatre Live productions throughout the year. We’re currently assessing the best way to deliver the shows but tell your friends and we’ll provide further details soon. We aim to run two trial events in the next quarter. Many thanks to James for initiating this exciting development.

CARNIVAL
The club was a hive of activity for our open night on Thursday with team squash, team tennis and pickle ball on display. Many thanks to all the members who came down and assisted. Likewise, many thanks to our teenage helpers for delivering a fun stall at the Carnival on Saturday, with over 100 community participants engaging in and learning about the club. A special mention goes to the person who attempted the volley challenge with a Labradoodle in a dog harness. We understand the dog is unharmed other than suffering mild whiplash.

TENNIS
We will be hosting the Derbyshire Tennis Championships this August (26th - 31st). This is a prestigious event for the club and volunteers are already planning the kitchen rota. It’s also a great opportunity to see some high-quality tennis and to socialise with friends. All help welcome so please call James or Sal if you’re available to assist in any way. More details to follow in due course.

We will hold a Tennis leaders’ course for ages 11 – 16 on Sunday 9 July, 9am - 12pm. This is a well-proven first step to begin tennis coaching, a great development experience and an impressive CV filler. Contact James 07968 058383.

School Programme - The coaching team are embarking on a school programme for the next few weeks, involving over 400 children and finishing with a fun day at the club (weather permitting).

Our first Monday social Pickleball session on 24th June, was well-attended. It runs every week from 5.30 pm and is a drop-in session so people can arrive anytime. We also run afternoon socials every Wednesday from 2 pm. All members - Tennis and Squash, can come along and play. Many members have already discovered the sport, from active octogenarians to county junior tennis players. It’s easy to learn and we’ll be dedicating courts and providing both guidance and equipment to people playing for the first time. Members can book a Pickleball court at any time, it's court 6 on Clubspark. If anyone requires any further information, please contact Brent on 07885 427623 or James on 07968 058383.

JUNIORS

Kids’ Summer Holiday Club involving all club sports will run for 7 weeks in the school holidays – contact James (07968058383).
