Duffield Squash & Tennis Club Update - 21/04/24

Dear [[firstname]],

The 100m sprint

Works to finish tennis court 6 start mid next week.

The Gym really will be opening within a couple of weeks. Apologies for the delay.

I’ve never formally introduced Chris Johnson who is our not so new House Caretaker.

However just like in London today, our reinstatement is a marathon not a sprint

Tennis court 6

Works to finish tennis court 6 start mid next week which is going to cause disruption to that court and could quite possibly mean it is out of action for a month - TBC. At the same time as starting this work we are also taking the opportunity of trying to remove the horrible old green water tank sat rotting behind the fence. Please do wish us well with that unenviable task !

On court 6 some new concrete edges will first be laid so that the new playing surface can be laid w/c 29th April. The new surface is a proprietary specialist sports mix of porous macadam, and is the best porous surface available. After 3 weeks of curing it will be ready to fully paint and then add court lines for both tennis and pickleball. It will hopefully be ready for normal play by mid May which has always been the plan.

Gym

Apologies for the frustrating delay in getting the gym open, but the decision making has been driven by the insurers.

We have finally got agreement from the insurers for the price of the kit written off in the flood. We identified an issue with the very heavy and tall Queenax column which is currently laid in the middle of the floor, and it is now confirmed that it cannot be reinstalled. This meant a rethink with our in-house knowledgeable members & professionals and with our gym kit supplier.

We have now ordered new equipment which will give all the required cardio and strength & conditioning capability we need.

The new kit is hopefully being installed next week, so if all goes to plan the gym will reopen on Monday 29th April.

Squash

The courts are still playing well and it will be great to see the squash & racketball leagues getting even more active, and to see the courts fully booked every evening.

House

I have never formally introduced our new(ish) House Caretaker Chris Johnson who started with us shortly after the flood, so is only now really starting to do the job for which he was recruited !

Chris will be looking after the fabric of the building to ensure that everywhere is kept clean and correctly maintained. He will also be carrying out a lot of the daily, weekly, and other periodic checks that we are obliged to carry out. Perhaps the easiest way to describe Chris’s role is that it includes everything that our previous cleaners used to do, a lot of Phill Harrison’s previous duties, and some of Pete Dyson’s role. Chris is the go to person for all questions and requests for most things within the clubhouse and if he can’t answer a query or fix a problem himself he will find someone that can. His club email is house@dstc.uk or you can see him around from before 7am when through to mid morning Monday to Thursday, and a shorter day on Friday.

Finally

Now that we have both changing rooms operational again, the junior priority changing window is able to resume.

This allows juniors to change for coaching after school, and adults are therefore requested to avoid using the changing rooms 3.40pm - 4pm on weekdays in term time.

The details of this arrangement are covered under the changing room policy, which is posted in the clubhouse and websites.

Regards,

Nigel
